Top of the baby quilt is done.

Well my goal today was to finish the baby quilt top. Next comes pressing, cutting the batting and the soft flannel back, and quilting.

New Quilt

After a break for the holidays, I am working on a new theme baby quilt. I never used a panel before but this was the only way to get the theme fabric I wanted. I hope to finish this in a few days. 

The Tuffet

Today was the second and final tuffet class. Julia Struthers was a great teacher. On earlier post I showed the sections that I had to sew together and the completed tuffet cover. Today Julia guided us through the upholstering process. It was so much fun. We used hammers and staple guns connected to compressors. I was with the same group of ladies and we enjoyed finishing our tuffets.  

I enjoyed departing from my quilt making and trying something new. This was hard because as many of you know I quilt by hand. I had to use my mom's machine. I know she was smiling. Of course, now I'm hooked and want to make another one. I think I want to make one for a little girls room or a baby girls nursery.  My daughter suggested I make a matching quilt.  Great gift idea.

More of my past work.

I have shared some of my past work with you.  I thought I would share a few more things. I mentioned that I make baby quilts. I think they make a great gift that can last a lifetime.  I get pictures from parents of their little ones napping under my comfy quilts.  I always put flannel on the back so they are soft and warm.  I always ask if the parent has a theme and/or color scheme. I am currently working on two quilts for babies right now.  I will post some pictures of completed quilts in the next few posts for you to see.

Tuffet next Stage

I completed the eight sections of the tuffet. The next step was to join them together and press open the seams. That was not easy because it was round after it was joined together and it became narrow at the top.  After the seams where pressed open, I had to zig-zag a cord around the bottom of the fabric.  The machine and I had a real fight. Now I am ready for the second and final class Saturday. The instructor will show me how to stuff the tuffet, attach a button on the top, cover the bottom and add four legs. I ordered mahogany legs.  Below you can see the circle of fabric.  I will post my completed project Saturday.  

Tuffet progress!

I have been working on my tuffet.  I had to complete eight sections with 8 strips of fabric in each section.  I used a pack of Jelly Roll fabric that was perfect for this project.  In the beginning I was taking time to coordinate the colors.  As time went on I decided to just mix them up. I posted what some of the sections looked like.  

Something New

I decided to try something new. I was walking out of my favorite fabric store and saw a beautiful tuffet.  Yes a tuffet.  I decided I had to take the class.  I signed up and found out later I had to use a sewing machine.  My least favorite thing, using a sewing machine.  My mom showed me how hers worked but I erased it from my mind.  I was able to thread it and figure out how to sew a straight stitch but the bobbin was not cooperating. Thank goodness for Lee one of the five women in the class for showing me how to thread the bobbin.  Once I mastered that I was able to sew with ease.


This is a picture of the tuffet I saw in the store,  the one I am making has different colors.  I will let you follow my progress.

Favorite Things

One of my favorite things to do is make a quilt and give it as a gift.  I like to see the smile on the recipients face when they open the package.  In my workplace I started the tradition of making a baby quilt for co-workers first baby.  This has given me great pleasure over the years.  One year I was very busy because three sets of twins were born.  It was fun making twin quilts.

Once the mom and dad to be have selected a theme or color choice they let me know.  It is always fun to hunt for the perfect fabric.  The internet has been a great help in finding some really interesting fabric to go with the theme choses. I recently finished a Nautical Theme and a Patriotic Theme.  I found the Patriotic Theme fabric online in a store in California.  Love the internet.   Dad was a Helicopter Pilot in the Navy.  I found fabric with helicopters landing on a ship.

I also completed quilts to donate to the shelter where my sister volunteers.  I spoke about her work in an earlier post.  I will post pictures of some of my baby quilts on my next blog post.

2012 Block of the Month - Completed

I thought that I would show you the completed quilt that I made in the 2012 class.  At the end of the class you have a lap quilt but I added additional blocks to make a queen size quilt. I gave it away as a gift.

It has been a long time since I have posted anything.  I've had many starts and stops.  It has been a little over two years since my mom passed and I think the second year was harder than the first.  I do feel I am moving forward now.  I completed a few quilts and am working on three block of the month lap quilts.  My good friend Mar asked me to teach her how to quilt and she is now doing two block of the month quilts with me.  I have also completed three baby quilts which I will post for you to see. So I hope you will continue to follow me and also let me know what crafts you are working on.
