Current works in progress

I am currently working on two projects.  The first project is a block of the month project.  I go to a quilt shop that is quite a distance from my home but they have awesome fabric. In March they start a new block of the month project and it continues until January.  They said currently about 700 women are participating  in this project.  Each month you receive fabric, the pattern for the block of the month and the instructor demonstrates the assembly process.  I am making a quilt for a double bed.  It will take 20-12 inch blocks.  I have 10 blocks completed so far.  I have to make eight extra blocks to make my double quilt.  We are using  Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Collector's Edition Vol.4 for patterns.

Below are four of my blocks and the quilt I make three years ago with the same group. Mom and I went together and it was a fun Saturday morning adventure.  Her completed quilt is on a bed in someone's home, but I held onto mine.  I made mine by hand and it is warm and comfy.

A Little More History Before I Move On

I want to add a little more history before I go on and share some projects I am currently working on.
The flower basket wall hanging I shared in the previous post is very large.  I made three of these all together.  One in blue tones hangs in a home in California, another in mauve tones hangs in a home in New Jersey, the yellow one that I shared with you is hanging in a homeless shelter in Maryland.

The shelter, located in Maryland, is special because my sister has worked very hard to help in the development of the shelter.  It houses individuals and families and offers job training.  The  shelter put out a call to all quilters when it was in the building stage for quilts to go on the beds. Mom and I made four quilts.  Mom made two double quilts and I made two baby quilts.

I am going to share pictures of these quilts and others along our journey on Annie's Quilting Legacy.

A few of my first applique pieces

I wanted to share a few of my early hand applique pieces.  I hope to improve my picture taking skills as I continue to blog and take pictures of my work.

I'm  working on two quilts right now. One for my daughter and one for a friend. I will share my progress with you.

Annie's Quilting Legacy Begins

You may have read in my profile, I am a quilter.  I hand piece my quilts.  If you are new to quilting, hand piecing means I only sew by hand.  This is very relaxing and allows me to take my work with me.  I have always disliked using a sewing machine.  The thread would break or jam and the bobbin would run out leaving me frustrated.  This led to the end of my use of the sewing machine.

I was introduced to the art of hand appliqué by a woman who saw me working on a counted cross stitch pattern and thought I might enjoy doing hand appliqué.  I later became interested in the beautiful quilting my mom was doing. Over the ten or twelve years I have been quilting I have shared the joy of quilting with my mom.  Finding a great fabric store, a new quilt book or pattern was a thrill for both of us.  We could be found in our big television room quilting.  Mom would be working by machine and I would be hand piecing. Usually a football game or Matlock rerun would be on.  Great memories.

I hope to share my love of hand quilting with others and keep the art alive through this blog.   I will share projects past, present and future through written word and photos.  I also will share great finds. I also want to honor my mom's memory and keep Annie's Quilting Legacy alive.
